A day of rest moored at Brindley Place. Visited the Jewelry Quarter and Museum, and on the way back the new Birmingham Central Library. It's an impressive building on 9 floors with gardens and balconies on the 4th and 7th floors and a panoramic view over the City from the 9th. A centre of knowledge and learning beyond compare, ranging from music on the lower ground to photography and fine arts on the top floors. The Library includes a circular atrium surrounded by shelves of books reaching up 4 floors high. The ninth floor in the golden dome is a beautifully oak paneled room dedicated to the memory of William Shakespeare and his works.

Cold and wet, but cheered by news that there were volunteer lock-keepers on the Farmers Bridge Lock Flight, we turned right onto the Worcester and Birmingham Canal to face the next challenge of 13 locks. These locks were better maintained and with the rain turning to drizzle the first 2 locks passed without event. Then a passing pedestrian carrying his shopping up the towpath offered to lend a hand. He was a lean eccentric looking character of West Country origin but also a fellow boater, with his cork key float hanging from his leather belt. With 3 pairs of hands and 3 windlasses tackling the lock gates we passed through the next 7 locks very quickly. Then we shook hands with our mystery friend and he headed off up the flight with his shopping bag. His role was soon replaced by the volunteer lock keeper, who spent his Tuesdays helping boaters up this flight. We had reached the Top Lock by 1.00pm and quickly found an excellent mooring alongside Brindley Place. (13 Locks and a rise of 81 feet).

An early start to the day with a deceiving sunshine. Quite chilly at the tiller as we face the daunting challenge of 2 big flights of locks heading to the City Centre. The first flight, The Aston Flight, started badly as the boat became jammed in the bottom gate which could not open fully. 15 minutes of engine and tiller efforts together with judicious release of water through the top gates finally freed the boat to reverse back into the canal. After opening and closing the gate a few times, then clearing some debris from behind the gate Yarra entered the lock successfully to start the climb. 2nd lock (lock 10) was no better. Progressing through the locks 9, 8, 7, 6 the rain returned. By the top lock it was raining heavily.
So far a climb of 70 feet over 11 difficult locks. But not yet half way to the City.

After another wet evening exploring the local pubs, we turned south at Fazeley Junction onto the Birmingham and Fazeley Canal. Climbing over 93 feet through a total of 14 locks at Curdworth and Minworth before entering the industrial landscape of northern Birmingham. After running alongside and sometimes beneath the M6 Motorway and Spaghetti Junction, we turned left at Salford Junction and took refuge for the night at the British Waterways Yard moorings at Cuckoo Wharf.

Two nights at Fazeley and the chance to "enjoy" a very wet Sunday in Tamworth the parliamentary seat of Sir Robert Peel, former Prime Minister and creator the police force. Sunday closing rules apply here so most places were closed. But did have a terrific Sunday Roast Lunch at the Market Vaults pub. Very traditional and ordinary place but good food and played non-stop Motown on the sound system. Also witnessed a very wet bride and her bridesmaid arriving for her wedding at Tamworth Castle (complete with Scots Piper)

2015 Cruise is finally underway. Minor repairs and modifications in the Marina then off down the Trent and Mersey Canal towards Alrewas. A beautiful old world village with four great pubs and terrific food. Also our first breakdown. All the engine electrics packed up. Without the electrics and controls this 1500 cc Beta Diesel engine would not stop running. After a while reading the manual the skipper had to climb down into the engine compartment to find the safety cut-off lever at the base of the engine. - Then silence. - Thanks to a local mechanic and car breaker managed to get a couple of 40w fuses, rescued from scrapped cars, to replace the blown fuse in the bottom of the engine. Baked our first whole meal loaf for this trip, tastes nutty with a touch of molasses. Yummy with marmalade. Now heading towards Fradley Junction. Then onwards down the Coventry Canal towards central Birmingham.

Wednesday pm. Nasty noises down below. Lots of plastic, rope and fishing line wrapped round the propeller. Cleared that, then spotted another problem, three loose bolts on the prop shaft coupling. Greasy hands and lots of bad language. that's the end of cruising for today. Good job I moored near a pub.

Monday 14 Apr. Bright sunny and chilly, wonderful smell of grilled bacon in the morning air. Early start with the promise of gentler cruising on the Trent & Mersey Canal. 4 big double locks to negotiate (10ft - 12ft deep) with long stretches of peaceful rural cruising in between. Pushed on a bit extra and arrived at Willington by 2.00 pm. 6 hours good cruising.

Sunday 13 Apr. Windy but brighter later; from the River Soar to the River Trent. Vast expanses of fast moving water and big locks. Finally arrived at the relatively safe haven of the Sawley Flood Locks on the Upper Trent, and a good mooring on the towpath opposite the marina.

Woken 7.00 am. Bright sunny morning but still a bit chilly. Wonderful warm log fire burning as I enjoy breakfast with tea and toast. Listening to internet radio, ABC Melbourne (St Kilda losing to Adelaide), never mind, you cant have everything. Heading up to the River Trent today. Water levels high so could be tricky.

And now our marathon cruise has come to its end. In the last 4 months we have travelled from the midlands to oxford, the Thames and out through the Thames Barrier. We have been involved in 2 major boating festivals at Little Venice, and at Crick. (and we had a welcome break for 4 weeks in France and Spain).

We travelled a total distance 545 miles, including:
188.6 miles of narrow canals;
169.4 miles of broad canals;
50.9 miles of small rivers;
93.3 miles of large rivers;
1.3 miles of commercial waterways;
30.8 miles of tidal rivers;
9.3 miles of seaways;
and 352 locks including:
139 narrow locks;
177 broad locks;
34 large locks;
2 none locks.
and 10 tunnels including:
Husband's Bosworth Tunnel (1166 yards long),
Crick Tunnel (1528 yards long),
Braunston Tunnel (2042 yards long),
Maida Hill Tunnel (272 yards long),
Islington Tunnel (960 yards long),
Blisworth Tunnel (3056 yards long) and
Newbold Tunnel (250 yards long)).
There were at least 26 moveable bridges of which 18 were left open and 54 small aqueducts or under-bridges

It's still amazing to think that after cruising each year since 2005 and after such a marathon effort this year, NB Yarra has still only covered about half of the total waterways in England and Wales.
Here's looking forward to our next cruise (wherever that may lead us)

Normal Service will be resumed as soon as possible. -
Actually we had a good weekend at the Crick Show, then headed west towards Warwick. Struggled to get a connection to upload more pics but watch this space. Many more to come.
Decided to escape for a few weeks to warmer climes and headed off to the South of France for a few weeks.

A wonderful sunny day - fantastic! Travelled 6 miles and did 15 locks. Jogging between locks for cardio and winding for that upper body workout. Have to pull up my jeans now as they keep slipping:) The countryside here (Marsworth) is fantastic. The ponds near the locks are being turned into nature reserves. Saw a mink running along the lock gate and a volunteer who helped with the 7 lock flight told us that that animal liberationists released these creatures, which were being farmed, into the wild some three decades ago. As a result the local otter population has been decimated. Still the good news is that the otters are making a comeback along with the trout and salmon in some parts - all good.

Wednesday 15 May: The rain forecast for this morning did not materialise so we set off about 8 am. 5 miles and 13 locks later we moored at Berkhamstead. A well preserved and maintained stretch of canal with 4 great canalside pubs around 2 very pretty locks. Just across the road is the mainline railway station. Because it's the line from London to all places north there is a high speed 150 kph train passing every 3-4 minutes. The trains are so smooth and fast that they barely disturb the tranquility of the area.

Tuesday 14 May. Early start managed 5 hours Inc 13 locks before lunch. Moored last night at Rickmansworth after a long day travelling north from London. Today we finally passed under the M25 so we have officially left Greater London behind us. Through Abbott's Langley and Kings Langley, now moored at Hemel Hempstead. Just started rating heavily so this is a good place to stay tonight with a big supermarket just across the water and 2 big DIY stores just round the corner. Still to climb up another 22 locks to the summit tomorrow.

Finally moored at Willow Tree Marina, where we spent two nights last week on the way to Little Venice. After the cruel muscle taxing disrepair of the 3 heavy locks at Camden, the relaxing lock free 3 hour cruise here was physically easier. Unfortunately it was tempered by increasing drizzle then rain and a cold wind that managed to penetrate into any unprotected area of skin. Moored and once more inside the cabin, the wood burner gave us a warm toasty environment to anticipate the culinary delights ahead of us.

Moored outside the Leander Club where we had dinner. Henley in preparation for the Regatta. Leander Club Honours Board full of Olympic medalists (mainly gold) - very impressive. Loads of pink hippos everywhere and I didn't have a lot to drink :)

A solid day travelling today - now moored up at the foot of Windsor Castle on a plot of land which Eton allows ordinary folks to use (for a price of course). Had everything today - sun, wind, rain, hail and more sun. A nice Australian shiraz, beef bourgignon and hopefully the AFL if we can finally get the subscription to work....then off exploring tomorrow.

A welcome break in Oxford - love the place. Had a real ale at the Turf Tavern a bit of 16th C architecture (just mind your head on the very low beams). Spent the evening walking around, stumbling on a choir in one of the college's church. Today a trip to the covered market amongst other things (castile, hill, Thames, most of the colleges, the Bodleian Library and Ashmolean Museum) which is now under threat because of spikes in rent. (Perhaps the real reason is the pies sitting in mashed potato amidst a sea of gravy with an island of mushy peas near by :) - the words 'health food' do not come to mind. Still the mushy peas were minted!)
The local lock keeper was nowhere in sight so no licence yet to travel the Thames. Hope to negotiate this at a lock further down once we're off tomorrow. The locks are mechanised from here so trading the windless for a panel of buttons. At one level an improvement but a whole different ball game - wider locks, chains and steel and more room in which to shunt from side to side.
David is currently running bits of rope together so that one piece can be joined to the front of the boat and held fast by the person on the tiller through the cabin. Hmmmm hope the lock keeper is back on duty tomorrow.

April 20: 5 miles 3 locks and 2 lift bridges to Thrupp. Moored up for lunch in the local pub alongside the canal. It was a lovely warm sunny afternoon and the local beers together with roast beef club sandwiches eaten in the sun drenched garden behind the pub caused us to linger longer. Walking back along the canal bank in the warm sun it was clearly the best decision to enjoy the environment and stay here for the night. Oxford can wait till tomorrow.

April 19: Haddons Bridge to near Tackley Village. 10 miles, 7 locks and a very difficult lift bridge at Upper Heyford. Could not moor anywhere near Lower Heyford because of the large number of boats already there. Decided to continue and moored at a very isolated spot about 1/2 mile east of Tackley, with woodland both sides of the canal and occasional clumps of bull-rushes. The environment was idyllic Oxfordshire countryside, and even had horses and foals running in the fields across the canal. Enjoyed a full roast chicken dinner with all the trimmings. The Galley Slave excelled.

April 18: Banbury to Haddon Bridge. 5 miles and 3 locks. left Banbury later in the day as the weather started to improve. Were enjoying cruising in the sun when we were suddenly hit by a terrific Hail Storm and strong side winds which lasted about 30 minutes. Decided to take no chances and moored at the first pleasant site we came to, opposite a farm shop.

Tuesday 16 April: on the Oxford Canal via Fenny Compton and Cropredy to Banbury. 13 miles and 12 locks. Rolling English Countryside, with freshly planted fields of crops and grazing sheep, cows and bulls.

Monday 15 April. Down the Oxford Canal from Braunston to Napton on the Hill then onwards to moor near bridge no 128. 6 miles to Napton with no locks, then moored for lunch at the Folly Inn, and wandered around Napton Village. Went to a beautiful old medieval church sitting on a hill 400ft above the surrounding countryside. After lunch a further 8 miles and 7 locks before mooring in the middle of a remote pastureland with only sheep for neighbours.

NB Yarra updated their status.

Crick Marina to Braunston. 10 miles, 2 tunnels and 13 locks which included the Watford Staircase Flight. Crick Tunnel is 1026 yards long and Braunston is 2042 yds. The six locks at Braunston at double width so we descended in tandem with a holiday boat. Braunston is a very busy boating centre being the intersection of the Grand Union Canal and the Oxford Canal.

Single handed from North Kilworth to Crick Marina. 4 Hours non-stop but no locks. Cool and windy with occasional showers. Meanwhile the Skipper's Mate enjoyed a day of tourism and drove around Warwick and Leamington Spa.

Now in Banbury - yes of tarts and horses fame. There's actually a statue of a fine lady on a white horse near the cross. We travelled through various tunnels and quite a few locks (including some double ones) in order to get here. We were lucky to coincide with another boat as we hit the double locks which meant with their crew of six the going was a lot easier. Have to say that the lock gates have got heavier since we last travelled. Spring has sprung here and apart from warmer weather there's a haze of yellow daffodils over everything and blossom on every second tree. Not having grown up with proper seasons I'm always impressed with how things know what they are supposed to do by a certain date.
Something has gone a miss with the AFL subscription and I'm suffering from withdrawals - we're told it will soon be fixed and then I'll be able to watch each game as it was played. Not wanting to spoil the excitement I'm not reading newspapers.
The cost of living here seems far more reasonable than what we have come to expect in Melbourne (yes I know we probably get paid more). All good really and very much enjoying being away from the stress of everyday living, the fresh air and the exercise.
As I write David is immersed in some chandlery shop buying boat stuff - it's obvious how much he misses this when you see how much he enjoys living it. Still the wine is heaps better in Australia!

Now at Crick about to set off proper. Did the Foxton Staircase on our first day (10 intersecting locks). David sat for two exams today and passed with honours (RYA CEVNI and RYAVHF Radio Certificate) which enables us to travel down the Thames when we eventually get there. Me? Well I shopped in Birmingham. Cold but bearable (when it's not raining). Grey skies and loudly floral dresses in the shop windows seem odd bed fellows. You really get the feeling that things are tight here.

Found the boat in good nick - too cold for spiders so not much clearing of webs this time. All soooo pleasant and pretty with daffodils coming up everywhere and the blossom starting to cover the trees.

Visited Warwick Castle yesterday - more like a trip to Disneyland. But still worth a look. Love the little villages along the way eg Leamington Spa, Husbands Bosworth and Market Harbarour.

Heading down the Grand Union Canal to meet up with the Oxford Canal tomorrow en route to Braunston.

'Ding Dong the Witch is Dead' - has made the top 10 - now going for the top 5 with much debate about the role of the BBC in perpetuating what some see as unseemly behaviour!

After London and the Thames we shall be heading north up the Grand Union to spend the May Bank Holiday weekend at the Crick Boat Show.
